from new york city, this is "nightline" with terry moran. >> hello, thanks for joining us. few have fallen as far or as hard as former nfl star aaron hernandez, the hands that caught so many touchdown passes in handcuffs today as he was led into court, charged with the brutal murder of his friend, odin lloyd. how did two men from such different worlds even meet and how are they united by the two women in their lives? john trippen brings the report for the series crime and punishment. >> reporter: aaron hernandez practicing with his former team, the new england patriots. odin lloyd practicing with semi pro boston bandits. similar plays, similar moves.

but on game day, hernandez and the patriots were cheered on at gillette stadium by almost 70,000 fans. the bandits. >> you get maybe 200, you got a big, big game. hopefully you get 300. >> biggest amount in the stands, 300 people. >> i would say. >> reporter: they were two men from two vastly different universes. hernandez signed a mouth watering contract worth $40 million. odin lloyd. >> these guys here, how much do they make per game? >> none. for love of the game. >> don't make any money? >> don't make any money. >> reporter: according to lloyd's coach, somehow hernandez and lloyd had an unlikely relationship, united by the women in their lives. this is hernandez's fiance escorted from court by the defense team. lloyd dated her sister. friends say the two often would hang out, sometimes even talk football. prosecutors say something went

wrong, shifting their bond from cordial to fatal. >> that breaking news, an arrest warrant has been issued this morning for aaron hernandez. >> reporter: the whole world was watching as the 23-year-old former tight end was charged with murder, allegedly orchestrating the execution style killing of his friend. how did it all go so spectacularly wrong? aaron hernandez was raised in a marginal neighborhood in bristol, connecticut and had his share of heartache. >> father died when he was 16. that was very, very tough for him at the age that it happened. had a little bit of a tough upbringing, both because of that and before that. >> reporter: but hernandez had one gift that made everything better. >> football was something that he really loved. i think it gave him a little bit of a reprieve from some of the other everyday challenges of life. when he was around football, he could forget. >> reporter: even in high school, it was clear he had an unusual talent. he started to get calls from

colleges, eventually recruited by university of florida, a bright future stretched before him, if he could only keep his demons at bay. >> he himself said he had a history of getting into trouble. >> reporter: before he played a single game, his career was almost side lined forever. >> there are reports that aaron hernandez had an altercation at a bar called the swamp. >> reporter: a police report from the 2007 incident surfaced recently. hernandez got into a fight with the bar manager over two drinks hernandez maintained he hadn't ordered. guess who tried to come to his aid? according to the police report, squeaky clean college teammate tim tebow offered to pay for the drinks. instead, hernandez punched the manager so hard his ear drum burst. >> he could have been kicked off the team and was. >> reporter: he was never charged with the assault. odin lloyd also excelled in

football but didn't get the same treatment by the coach. >> did he not apply himself? >> reporter: his teammate daryl hodge says lloyd never went to college, he drifted into semi pro-football and odd jobs including a recent one as landscaper. >> did he have dreams of playing in the nfl? >> you felt realistic with yourself. >> reporter: at university of florida, hernandez was excelling on the field, 111 receptions, 12 touchdowns. but off the field, there were rumors. take a look at this personality test from a scouting report obtained by "the wall street journal." it said hernandez enjoyed, quote, living on the edge of acceptable behavior, and caution that it could become a problem for his team. he was a major talent, but as he approached the nfl draft in 2010, real questions were being raised. >> how did hernandez's past impact his draft stock? >> significantly.

this was a player most would agree had first round talent, maybe second round talent, to the fourth round. >> reporter: he was still one of the oh, so lucky few, chosen by the new england patriots to play in the nfl. he seemed to have it all, including a relationship with a beautiful girl he met in high school. that's how odin lloyd and hernandez met. he was dating her sister. >> two friends, dating the sisters, you see each other casually, barbeque, family having a cookout, you see each other on the pass by. that's what we thought it was. >> reporter: no matter how casually it started, friends say lloyd and hernandez met up and hung out, even when the women weren't around. they also shared a common upbringing, growing up in poor, tough neighborhoods. >> i think that's why it was an easy match for both of them to rise and not be in situation of

jail or incarceration was credit to both of them. >> reporter: that neighborhood was a reality lloyd had to deal with every day, with no money for a car, he was bike 20 miles to bandits games. >> you know he is dedicated, see him coming around the corner with his shoulder pads and helmet on the stairwell. >> reporter: there were times this talented linebacker couldn't afford a uniform. >> he was wearing a jersey with somebody else's name? >> couple games, yes. >> did you wonder why he was hanging out with a pro nfl player? >> no, some guys was envious of that, who wouldn't want to. >> reporter: somehow the relationship was about to become unravelled. they were at a nightclub when a dispute broke out. >> prosecutors say there was some kind of argument the friday night before, that hernandez was upset that lloyd was talking to a group of people.

did he discuss that with you? >> he said they went out friday, had a good time. didn't present anything about any argument or anything like that. >> i don't think he thought anything was wrong, i don't think he felt it was a fight. >> reporter: a day later, lloyd surprised teammates by showing up for practice without his bicycle. >> i see a black suv pull up, looking at who's in the car. i see him. odin, whose car is that. he said you know. >> reporter: daryl hodge, his friend and teammate saw him the last time sunday night. >> you were with him hours before he was murdered. >> yeah. >> what did you do. >> hang out, typical sunday. >> what time did you go out? >> he dropped me off, had a text from the manager saying he had work the next day. he had to make the decision to go home. he said all right, i am going home. >> reporter: prosecutors say he got in the car with hernandez at 2:30 in the morning. if he had work the next day,

what was he doing? >> i don't know. that's the question. >> reporter: prosecutors haven't publicly discussed motive, but documents they release reveal two points they're investigating further. his fiance, jenkins, told police she suspected lloyd was a marijuana dealer. police recovered in a safe in hernandez's house a scale. police say the kind used to weigh drugs. but lloyd's coach is adamant, lloyd had nothing to do with drug. >> he wasn't a drug dealer. you a drug dealer, you ain't riding a bike to practice. >> reporter: they say he has alleged involvement in a 2012 drive-by shooting in boston that left two people dead. could lloyd be dead because he knew details about the shooting? >> i don't know. odin lloyd, he is not a gang banker. he is petrified of guns. that's not the individual i know. >> reporter: in the coming weeks and months, we'll find out whether there was a lloyd no one
